Gregg has been building engines for 35 years. He builds mostly motorcycle based engines, 2 stroke and 4 stroke, specializing in the Sport Twin arena. In a typical year, Spears Enterprises builds between 30 and 40 engines.
We asked Gregg to tell us a good story, so he told us how he got his start with working on engines: “When I was seven, Mom and Dad worked and my Grandpa lived with us. I remember going out to the metal shed along side our home and inside was a lawnmower…and next to it was a tool box. I started finding tools that fit the nuts and bolts and started to tear the mower apart, the recoil pull starter came off the engine and I remember the winding of the pull starter coming unraveled and it was like a bird’s nest. I was so frightened I left the shed, closed the doors and when my father went to use the lawnmower on the weekend… well, I got into a lot of TROUBLE!”
Gregg graduated from high school in 1977 and went to work for the San Jose Police Department as its Lead Motorcycle Technician. It was soon apparent that his attention to detail was valuable to the motorcycle industry, and Gregg decided to start working on motorcycles in his off-hours. Soon he found an overwhelming response to his talents and in 1980 Spears Enterprises was born with $200.00 and a toolbox.
Working from his carport and making house calls, Gregg soon found a need for a total motorcycle repair facility. In 1991, after leaving the San Jose Police Department, Spears Enterprises was opened in Campbell, California. Working as a sole proprietor, the business was overwhelmed with customers and soon employees had to be hired to meet the demand of the workload. Long hours and relentless dedication to customers saw the business grow, and by 1995 Spears Enterprises expanded by opening a second location. By this time the business had established itself as the leader in police motorcycle maintenance, having as many as 12 different police department relying on Spears to meet their demands.
Gregg worked for the City of San Jose for 14 years as the lead Motorcycle Tech., 12 years as a Reserve Police officer with San Jose Police Department. He is a factory trained technician with Kawasaki, Honda and Harley-Davidson.
Working with specific road racers, Spears Racing became a recognized force in AFM, CCS, WERA, AHRMA, LRRS and AMA competition. Spears Racing has also expanded their efforts to include racing venues across the U.S. and into Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand, winning numerous international championships along the way. Spears Racing plans to continue their expansion of racing support in the years to come. “I believe you’re only as good as the last engine you built,” says Spears.
